What is Hotel General Manager Certification?

 

After congratulating Jacques Arnal on becoming the first certified General Manager in Manitoba, we have had enquiries about the certification and asking why a person who already is a GM would want to become certified. We will let Jacques answer that question.

 

"Thank you for your assistance in obtaining my Certified Hotel General Manager designation. I appreciate all the information and your prompt responses. I had read about the designation last summer and was pleased that MTEC was offering this program. I found the study material very beneficial with the skills and knowledge required to be a Hotel General Manager. I have over 30 years of experience and was able to learn more invaluable information on managing a hotel, especially with the current National Occupational Standards. The program covers Operations, Human Resource Management, Guest Service, Business Management, Marketing and Leadership and is invaluable to any Hotel General Manager. Many Certified Hotel Administrators have found this program to be very in-depth. I would recommend this designation to any Hotel General Manager, who will find the program very informative and useful in the day to day operations of their properties."

On a Personal Note:

 

MTEC has lost a colleague.  Jim Cook passed away on March 22nd. Jim taught many finance classes for MTEC over the past 5 years. He delivered training in Winnipeg and throughout Manitoba. Jim had a wonderful sense of humour and a way of making classes that many find intimidating, easy.  Jim was a Chartered Accountant who truly loved teaching and he assisted literally hundreds of people in starting and operating their businesses in Manitoba.

 

Jim will be greatly missed by the MTEC team.

Another Successful Year in Thompson!

 

 

MTEC would like to congratulate participants from the 2014 Thompson Hospitality Skills Program. Participants attended a seven week training program, designed to provide upgrading to assist in achieving employment in the tourism and hospitality industry. As well as occupational specific training in the areas of Front Desk Agent and Line Cook, the program included customer service and safety training.

 

We would like to thank our industry partners, the YWCA Thompson, Lakeview Inn and Suites Thompson, The Burntwood Hotel, Best Western Thompson Hotel & Suites, Quality Inn Thompson, Northern Flavours Catering, and Chicken Chef for their continued support.

Spring Job Fair Date Set!  April 23, 2014 at the RBC Convention Centre


MTEC strives to be the Go-To place for Manitoba's tourism, hospitality and retail industries.  One of the areas in which we assist is in helping with talent attraction. We offer semi-annual job fairs, as well as a job board, where employers can advertise job postings at no cost.

 

On April 23rd, 2014 MTEC will host the Spring Job Fair at the RBC Convention Centre. The past 2 job fairs attracted over 500 job-seekers and employers received an average of 90 applications each. To date Arctic Co-operatives Ltd (Arctic Co-ops), Calm Air International L.P., Joeys Restaurant, RBC Convention Centre, RONA, South Beach Casino, The Fort Garry Hotel Spa and Conference Centre, ThirdQuarter, The Source, Delta Winnipeg and the Victoria Inn Hotel & Convention Centre will have booths at the Spring Job Fair. The Registration fee is $175.00 plus GST.  Registrations must be received by April 13, 2014.

In 2013, the MTEC Job Board advertised 409 available positions in 39 communities throughout Manitoba. The job board was visited an average of 12,000 times per month. It is a great place to advertise for future employees at no charge.

Safety Corner 

Make Safety a Habit

Every year, the ultimate goal of NAOSH Week is the prevention of injury & illness in the workplace, at home and in the community. For the past 26 years NAOSH Week has had some great themes to guide us in our continued efforts to prevent workplace accidents.

In 2014, the NAOSH Week theme is a call to action, asking all Canadians, whether as an employer, an employee or a safety professional to "Make Safety a Habit!" Being safe, whether at home, work or play, should be as second nature as putting on a seatbelt when you get into a vehicle.

Commit: All you need is one month to commit to Making Safety a Habit. After this time, your new habit is easy to sustain.

Be Consistent: Make sure you do it every day. Without consistency, your new habit will be much harder to sustain.

Keep It Simple: Pick one thing to make you safer and focus on making it a habit.

Involve Others: Engage other colleagues to create the same good safety habit with you.

Do it for Yourself: Because getting home at the end of the day doesn't just happen.

Borrowing from Merriam Webster we can define a "safety habit" as a usual way or manner of behaving in order to accomplish a task in such a way as to prevent injury and accident: a manner that a person does often in a regular repeated way.

Numerous safety publications and experts explain how most accidents are the result of various substandard acts or behaviours. If we can reduce the frequency of some of these substandard acts or increase the frequency of the "positive" acts we can reduce the frequency of accidents. We believe we can accomplish all of this this by working to build solid safety habits.

Join your colleagues and individuals from across North America helping to make a difference by "Making Safety a Habit." Why not use NAOSH Week 2014 ... first week of May ... as your opportunity to make a difference?
