Benefits of Training Your Summer Staff with the Winnipeg BEST Ambassador Program

Manitoba tourism businesses can face hiring challenges when it comes to the busy summer season. Our industry typically has a higher turnover rate than others and this may be leaving you with questions about how much training you provide to these seasonal employees. How do you encourage productivity? How do you get your employees to return every year so that you don't need to re-train from the beginning every season?

Start by recognizing that seasonal staff have other priorities in their lives, like family and friends. Making your expectations clear about the job duties and hours will help you both in the long run.

Don't schedule them to work every weekend or holiday. Proper scheduling can ensure that you are not short-handed on those all important long weekends.

It's productive to have trained staff return year after year. Encourage, where possible, supervisory tasks and responsibilities in the areas of their career interests. For example, if a student is interested in marketing, encourage their input into your business. Rewarding careers can take off from these summer positions. Talk to your summer staff about the opportunities to make a career in our industry.

Be a great ambassador for both your business, and our province, by investing in training in the most important areas. You can do this by providing training such as Winnipeg BEST Ambassador training, a three hour session that informs your staff what there is to see and do in Winnipeg, so they can be helpful to your guests.

The next Winnipeg BEST Ambassador Program, normally offered at $49.00 per person, will be offered as a complimentary session, to assist you in getting your seasonal and other staff ready for your guests.

Date:Thursday, May 14

Time: 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Cost: Complimentary

MTEC Hospitality, Tourism and Retail Job Fair - Employers Experience Great Success With Talent Attraction

A special thanks to the RBC Convention Centre for hosting employers at our Spring Hospitality, Tourism and Retail Job Fair on April 1, 2015.

We had a great mix of employers at this event. These employers received an average of over 200 applications each at this event. Approximately 475 job-seekers had the chance to successfully apply at multiple locations.

Employers estimate that over 1200 interviews will be held as a result of this 4-hour event. We are glad to be able to help our sector with their summer recruitment.

The next MTEC Job Fair will be held in the late summer to help with your next hiring season.

The Manitoba Training and Education Centre, our Private Vocational School, offers 6 and 8 week training programs. All programs have a work practicum component and all of our training programs are based on nationally recognized occupational standards.

Manitoba is experiencing rapid growth in the hospitality and restaurant industry. MTEC opened the school for two purposes: to provide students with training and experience that will assist them in gaining employment and excelling at their careers, and to meet the current and forecasted need for well-trained employees in the industry.

April 21: Food & Beverage Server Training Program (6 weeks)

April 21: Line Cook Training Program (8 weeks)

June 9: Front Desk Clerk Training Program (6 weeks)

June 9: Housekeeping Room Attendant Training Program (6 weeks)

These 6 and 8 week comprehensive training programs are delivered by industry professionals in the classroom and a portion of the Line Cook Training Program is delivered in a commercial kitchen. Students will not only gain the education and skill to perform these jobs, they will have gained practical experience through their work practicum.

For more information on the Manitoba Training and Education Centre training programs, visit our website at www.MTECVocationalSchool.ca, email us at info@MTECVocationalSchool.ca or call (204) 957-7437 ext. 208.
