AED Empowerment

Learn how you can increase a person's odds of surviving a Sudden Cardiac Arrest from 5% with CPR to 75% with CPR and an AED!

In Canada 35-45,000 people die every year from sudden cardiac arrest. Did you know that cardiac arrest is not a heart attack? When a person has a heart attack, the blood supply to the heart is slowed or stopped due to a blockage. In a cardiac arrest a person's heart stops beating and breathing stops as well.

Cardiac arrest can strike a person at any age, any time, without warning. Without an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), they are unlikely to survive. Less than 5% of individuals survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. There is a short window of time for the defibrillation to be more successful, and that is if it is performed within 3 minutes of the cardiac arrest. Survival rates fall by 7% for every minute that passes without defibrillation.

With AED's being regulated for many types of businesses in Manitoba, they are now available in many places. The question is, does your staff know where they are located? Do they know how to use them? Do they know what else needs to happen at the same time? (Calling 911 and administering CPR while another staff person gets the AED)

This 3 hour session will explain the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest, how to perform CPR and how to use an AED. This informative session will walk participants through the entire process from start to finish, and prepare them to deal with this life threatening emergency. It will provide participants with a hands-on practice performing CPR and using an AED on dummies.
