Get the Facts on Your Obligations under PIPEDA
|
David Carrick, a Partner with the Winnipeg Law firm of Aikins,
MacAulay and Thorvaldson LLP, will present a comprehensive session on
PIPEDA-the federal government's Personal Information, Protection and
Electronic Documents Act. He will review existing obligations under
PIPEDA in terms of the collection, use, disclosure and retention of
personal information, alert you of amendments to PIPEDA that are
working their way through Parliament that will dramatically change how
your organization will need to respond to a breach of privacy, identify
liability minefields, and provide practical advice to reduce your
organization's risk of non-compliance. Employer's use of their
employee's Facebook postings will also be discussed, as well as the
possible liability to your organization.

MTEC is Moving!
The last week of March, MTEC will be moving to our new location at 75 Scurfield Blvd., Unit 3.
We
are looking forward to having a space that is on one floor, which will
make it wheelchair accessible. The new location will also have larger
classrooms and meeting rooms, and be conveniently located on a major bus
route.

The Importance of Safety Training
In
2011 the Accommodation and Restaurant sector in Manitoba incurred 1,320
injuries. Although this sector is considered "low-risk", 1,320 injuries
in one year is a significant number of unnecessary injuries. Our aim is
to take this sector from "low-risk" to no-risk.
In
2011 alone, 31,707 workers were injured at work in Manitoba and 34
workers didn't ever return home. Employers have the greatest degree
of authority and control over the operations of the workplace,
therefore they also carry the greatest responsibility for workplace
safety and health. It is a basic right for workers to be properly
trained so they are aware of their roles, aware of hazards involved with
the job, confident in carrying out their task's and are trained in the
safest way to perform their jobs.
Many
believe that young workers are the most "at-risk" in the workplace due
to lack of experience or training. Statistics show that it is actually
the 45-55 year olds that have had the most injuries in their age group
in Manitoba since 2007. Not only is it extremely important for young
workers to receive a proper orientation and training, but it is equally
important to ensure our older workers are re-trained whenever a work
process is altered or a new piece of equipment is introduced into the
workplace. Training should be provided by a competent person and should
include methods to evaluate training needs, check for understanding and a
mechanism to ensure training is implemented and updated as required.
Another way to ensure older workers are more comfortable in their
workplace is to implement ergonomically friendly workstations.
Implementing these changes can increase productivity and morale in the
workplace, while decreasing the amount of musculoskeletal injuries.
