The Importance of Retention - How to Avoid Employee Turn-over

Retaining your employees may be the most significant challenge that you, as an employer, may face. After what often amounts to years of investment, in building a competent staff through training, mentoring and other types of guidance, you do not want to lose your best resources.

When employees leave, they take with them key knowledge, experience, and whatever training investment your organization has made in them. Furthermore, you must spend valuable time and money replacing them and training new recruits. Not only is the knowledge and experience of your long term employees critical to the success of your business, you can't discount the relationships that they have established with your customers! Customers like coming to a business where they are recognized by the staff. It creates customer loyalty and when a company is continually replacing their staff, the company's reputation is damaged.

How to you avoid employee turn-over? Create an effective retention plan that helps you understand why employees stay with or leave an organization-and use that information to put in place a range of strategies to ensure your organization meets employees' needs and expectations. Make your business a place where employees enjoy working. If an employee enjoys their work, they will do a better job and it will be apparent to your customers. Your goal should be to have your employees be ambassadors for your company!
  • When hiring, you need to start by properly explaining what the position is and what duties will be required. Many times new employees don't stay with an organization because they didn't completely understand the position that they were hired for.
  • Hire the right person for the job. Make sure that the new hire has the right skill-set, experience/education and personality for the position.
  • Provide the proper training, to insure that the new staff member has a clear understanding of how to perform their duties and is not learning by trial and error.

MTEC has been administering the SAFE Hospitality Program since 2005, delivering free and subsidized training and consulting to thousands in the Restaurant and Food Service industries and beyond. But, effective, April 1, 2016, we will no longer be able to provide these free and subsidized services, unless we receive majority support* for the continuation of SAFE Hospitality as a safety association.

The Association is able to operate and provide services because Members of the Restaurant and Food Service Industry paid a levy of 6% to 7.84% as part of their WCB contributions. Safe Manitoba has proposed a new, reduced levy of only 1-3% for Safe Hospitality to continue to operate.

Currently, Hotels in Manitoba are paying a total of $1,668,362 in WCB costs, which means that the average hotels pays approximately $4,571/year in WCB costs. The proposed 3% levy would amount to approximately $137/year.

In addition to free and subsidized training, Safe Hospitality also assures owners, managers and others in the industry are aware of current legislation and issues affecting the industry. Having a safety association like SAFE Hospitality will also make businesses in the 70106 Rate Code, Restaurant and Food Service Operations, as well as the 70103, Hotels & Motels, eligible for future financial incentives currently being planned by SAFE Work Manitoba. Businesses who are not part of a safety association will not be eligible for the incentive programs.

If you would like to discuss the continuation of SAFE Hospitality, please call or email, Dave Kramer at:

If you would like to support the continuation of the SAFE Hospitality Association please fill out, sign and fax or email the form below. Submitting this form implies support. You are not obligated to anything beyond that.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
