Diversity-Disability Sensitivity Training

In keeping with MTEC's mandate to keep our curriculum current and relevant, we are excited to announce a new session "Embracing Diversity in the Workforce" Disability Sensitivity Training.

This 3-hour session will include information that is relevant to your employees and your customers. It will include safety and customer service training, as well as how to create an inclusive environment.

A disability can happen at birth, as a result of an accident or aging. In Manitoba there are 170,000 people who have self-identified as disabled. As business owners and managers, we have a responsibility to operate an organization that is safe and accommodating. Having bars in the washroom isn't enough. We need to make sure that we have an establishment that is welcoming, accessible and where customers are greeted by well-trained, professional employees.

Employees Resolve to be More Productive and Learn New Skills in 2013

This time of year a lot of us start thinking about New Year's resolutions. Some are personal goals and others are related to work. In a recent survey, BMO found that the top three New Year's resolutions of employees in Canada for 2013 are to be more productive, to learn a new workplace skill, and to collaborate/network.

Well-trained employees can make a major impact on productivity levels, customer service and the financial bottom-line. Ergonomics: Musculoskeletal Injuries (MSI)

Ergonomics is commonly defined as fitting the task to the worker. Certain work environments can cause injuries to workers because of their poor ergonomic design. The causes of Musculoskeletal Injuries can include, but are not limited to; repetitive tasks, awkward postures, improper lifting and transferring of loads, carrying heavy loads, frequently reaching above shoulder level, inadequate lighting, etc.

If a worker is suffering from a Musculoskeletal Injury they may require time off work which the employer could be obligated to pay for his/her time off, medical expenses, WCB costs therefore increasing overall WCB rates. Not to mention the costs of having to replace that worker.

However, a company that has conducted a risk assessment, implemented ergonomic training and developed some safe work procedures; most likely will see an increase in worker productivity, a reduction in absenteeism, time loss, and WCB costs. By employers taking steps to implement control measures typically shows the workers that the company values them, which in turn usually motivates workers to stay with the company, increasing retention.
