MTEC is happy to announce a new 3-part series: Preparing Your Organization for a Short or Long Term Absence of the Manager
Whether
you are the manager or the owner of a company, many of the details
involved in the day-to-day operations may be solely done by yourself.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you became ill or for some
other reason couldn't operate your company for a short or extended
period of time?
There
are many reasons that organizations don't have a succession plan; lack
of time and resources to train key personnel; lack of trust that they
could do it as well as you; or maybe never really thinking about it. For
whatever reason, having a plan can mean the difference between your
company surviving in your absence, or suffering financial loss.
All
three sessions will be complimentary, but space is limited to 12
participants per session. Register for one, two or all three sessions.
The information provided will not only be useful in the case of the
manager's absence but for the sustainability and future growth of the
business.
Session 1: Thursday, June 13 9:00 - Noon
Short term and Emergency Succession Planning: Creating a Backup for a Key Person
You
may be a strong leader or working with a strong leader. "When a
strong leader IS THE BUSINESS, it can be impossible to be away from the
business, even for a short time." Every business has a "Key
Person" - usually the person who has the keys. How do you break
free from being the business? It starts with a short term
succession plan for something as simple as an extended vacation and may
involve something longer term.
This
session is a combination of Succession Planning and Risk Management for
business owners, key management personnel, or employees that you would
like to prepare to become managers . It includes a process for how
to create and implement a short term succession plan, giving you the
time away from the business and reducing the risk to the business.
Session 2: Thursday June 20, 9:00-Noon
Basic Business Math-The Numbers That Will Help Your Business Succeed
From
mark-ups to margins, and BOGO to Banners, learn how to set your prices
and control your costs. This workshop is ideal for the business owners
and managers who want to gain better control over the financial side of
their business. It is also invaluable in preparing staff to assume
management positions to accommodate growth of the business or to adopt
the role of a manager when the boss is sick or on holidays.
You
don't need to be an accountant to make the numbers work for you. This
workshop provides simple, easy to understand solutions to many of the
problems that a new or existing business faces in their day-to-day
operation.
As a business owner or manager, you have to make decisions anyway. Learn how to make better ones.
Session 3: Thursday, June 27, 9:00-Noon
Developing Coaching Skills
Workplace
coaching is a very effective way to improve poor performance and build
more productive teams. Unfortunately, it is an activity very often
left off a supervisor's to-do list, mainly because of uncertainty on
how to provide effective coaching. This workshop provides new and
emerging supervisors the opportunity to develop their workplace coaching
skills. By the end of the session, participants will be able to
recognize the benefits of coaching, identify their role in the process
and understand the techniques involved in successful coaching.
Participants practice techniques and strategies and walk away with
improved coaching skills.

Careers in Tourism and Hospitality
Manitoba
Mentors hosted its first panel presentation on Careers in Tourism and
Hospitality on April 18th at the University of Winnipeg. Space costs
were generously covered by Jennifer Moore Rattray, MPA Associate
Vice-President, Indigenous, Government and Community Affairs.
Our
panelists were: Pit Turenne, GM, Partner of Aikens Lake Wilderness
Lodge, Mark Clarke, Manager, Tourism Services, Travel Manitoba, Shirley
Tillet, Event Management Specialist, STA Inc. and Erica Eden, GM Best
Western Hotels. They talked about their career paths and opportunities
within their businesses. Students walked away with the message: follow
your passion, believe in continuous learning, work hard and have a
positive attitude. Two hours was a bit long for students to sit but they
were a great audience with good questions at the end!
We
would also like to thank our event supporters who helped make this
event a success: Pat Britton, Executive Coordinator, Premier's Economic
Advisory Council, Shannon Fontaine, CEO and Lori Slobodian, Program
Training Manager, Manitoba Tourism Education Council, Michelle Wallace,
Acting Executive Director, Tourism Secretariat, MB Culture, Heritage and
Tourism, and the Alliance team.
On
May 30th, Manitoba Mentors will hold a Celebratory Luncheon Event at
the University of Winnipeg in recognition of all our participants and
supporters. This event is a wonderful way to close off the school year,
acknowledge our participants and supporters, and "show-off" all the
career awareness opportunities that students have experienced. There
will also be a celebratory event in Steinbach at the end of May for all
Manitoba Mentors participants who made this year of our program such a
success.
Make
a difference-in your business and in a life of a young person by
participating in the Manitoba Mentors program. We're always recruiting.
Manitoba Mentors can help your organization connect with the future.

Zombies Don't Know Better, but You Should
May 24 2013 Posted by: jwright
A
group of imaginative Winnipeg students have created a winning workplace
safety video featuring a brainless zombie. The students, of Oak Park
High School, entered the video in their provincial safe work video
contest snagging first place, and two $1,000 prizes - one for them, and
one for their school.
The
quirky, 50-second video features a group of paint spattered labourers
who are requested by their supervisor to replace some ceiling tiles
using a ladder. The ladder is obviously, comically decrepit, but the
supervisor pretends that there is no problem with it, pointing out that
their colleague, Jimmie, is happily using it.

SAFE Hospitality Present: Disability Safety Awareness Training for Businesses
In
keeping with MTEC's mandate to keep our curriculum current and
relevant, we are excited to announce a new session; Disability Safety
Awareness Training for Businesses.
This
3-hour session will include information that is relevant to your
employees and your customers. It will include safety and customer
service training, as well as how to create an inclusive environment by
giving you tools to manage this aspect of your business proactively and
effectively.
A
disability can happen at birth, as a result of an accident or aging. In
Manitoba there are 170,000 people who have self-identified as disabled.
As business owners and managers, we have a responsibility to operate an
organization that is safe and accommodating. Having bars in the
washroom isn't enough. We need to make sure that we have an
establishment that is welcoming, accessible and where customers are
greeted by well-trained, professional employees.
This
session will teach you about requirements for safe
evacuation, disability etiquette practices and the importance of
inspections and documentation in regards to emergency procedures. Safety
awareness training in this area can strengthen your existing health and
safety program and promote a greater level of teamwork for your staff
members.
This
complimentary session will be held on June 13, from 1:00pm-4:00pm. For
more information please contact us at 204-694-SAFE (7233) or email info@safehospitality.com. To register, please click here.

Certified
Hotel General Manager (CHGM), the First Canadian-Made Credential for
Accommodations Administrators, now Available from emerit.ca The
lodging and hospitality industry in Canada has long relied on
professional designations from the United States and elsewhere to
identify outstanding hotel management professionals. While these
programs have value, they do not accurately reflect the realities of
managing a hospitality property in this country. A new, Canadian credential is now available for hotel administrators through emerit.
Developed and validated by representatives of over one hundred
accommodations properties from across Canada, the Certified Hotel
General Manager (CHGM) designation is awarded to candidates who
successfully complete the emerit Hotel General Manager certification program. Based on industry validated National Occupational Standards for Hotel General Manager, emerit Professional Certification and Credentials are: * Canadian made and managed; * Competency-based, requiring demonstration of skills and knowledge required in the occupation; * Developed by managers, administrators, and educators who are active in the hospitality industry; * Focused on recognizing industry experience and expertise; * Recognized globally for their development process and rigor of assessment. Professional Certification for Hotel General Manager,
which leads to the CHGM designation, is now available for purchase at
emerit.ca. There are three components of the certification process: a
proctored, multiple choice exam; a performance evaluation, which
consists of a structured interview; and a work history verification to
ensure that experience requirements are met. All
exam questions and the performance evaluation are based on the National
Occupational Standards for Hotel General Manager. It is strongly
recommended that candidates familiarize themselves with the skills and
knowledge covered in the standards before attempting the exam and
performance evaluation. The first examination dates will be in September 2013. Purchase your certification at emerit.ca to
reserve your spot now and count yourself among the very first Hotel
General Managers to hold the prestigious, Canadian industry credential
Certified Hotel General Manager (CHGM). To find out more about emerit training and certification products for tourism and hospitality trades, visit emerit.ca or call 1.800.486.9158 to speak to an emerit Training Solutions specialist.
