New Visitors are Coming: How to Make Sure They Come Back!

According to vacay.com,   Winnipeg has 'vaulted to tourism prominence'.   The Canadian Museum for Human Rights does for Winnipeg what the I.M. Pei's Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame did for Cleveland - creates a reason to go. So much so, in fact, that Winnipeg earns the distinction as the No. 5 Place to Visit in Canada in 2014, according to Vacay.ca's team of travel experts.  Other reasons to visit include a note worthy dining scene, along with our architectural gems.

So, as a business owner or manager, how do you plan to get ready?  Will you have new staff members that need to be trained?  What about your current staff?  Have you provided them with training? Do you have the policies and procedures in place to support your new staff?  Have they been trained on how to provide exceptional customer service, as well as how to deal with difficult situations?  What about cultural and generational considerations?

The customer service you deliver is going to be judged by a whole new set of visitors.  Setting the standard with your staff will involve more than just making sure they are smiling.  Customer service isn't just fluff.  Customer Service is what can make or break your business.  It should be the foundation of your business.  It will ensure that your staff are making your customers feel welcome, have answers to their questions, are provided with solutions to their problems and have exceptional experiences.

"Build it and they will come" is what Manitoba is counting on.  What we want to make sure of is that not only will they come... they will come back!

Safety Corner

Summer is coming soon, therefore there will be many young and new workers coming into workplaces. Young and new workers are commonly defined as people between the ages of 15 and 24, new immigrants to our province, or anyone in a new job, whether new to the workplace or experiencing a change in job duties.

Young and new workers are an asset, bringing fresh eyes and new ideas to a workplace. However, young and new workers are especially vulnerable to workplace injuries and illnesses due to lack of experience and ability to recognize hazards. Injuries at work most often occur when safety and health training has not been provided for the task being performed. Every year nearly 7000 Manitoba's young workers aged 15-24 report injuries to WCB.

It is the responsibility of an employer to train all new workers to protect themselves from hazards during course of their duties.  Supervisors are also legally responsible for their workers. The employer must ensure that their Workplace Safety and Health Program include a plan for training workers and supervisors in safe work practices and procedures. If the employer fails to comply with the WSH Act, they may be subject to prosecution.

It is the mission of SAFE Hospitality to support the prevention and reduction of workplace injuries, and develop a strong safety culture within Manitoba's Hospitality Sector.

We accomplish this by providing safety resources, education and practical solutions. Come and visit our newly developed website at www.safehospitality.com.
