emerit Training and Certification Resources for Food and Beverage Occupations

The Canadian Food and Beverage Services industry is facing a projected labour shortage equivalent to about 35,000 full time jobs by 2015 (The Future of Canada's Tourism Sector, March 2012). For food and beverage businesses, finding and keeping high performing employees will be even more difficult. Formal training and recognition programs are important strategies for retention of key employees, and will be crucial as shortages return.

Designed to complement existing training, emerit resources include National Occupational Standards, ebooks, Online Learning, and traditional Workbooks. They are flexible enough to be used as self-study courses or taught in a classroom or group training setting.

You may also want to reward top performers with emerit professional certification. Successful candidates are awarded a nationally recognized professional designation that identifies them as among the elite in their occupation.

For more information about how emerit can help prepare your business for success in the face of returning labour shortages, visit
emerit.ca or call 1-204-957-7437 or e-mail fmcintyre@mtec.mb.ca

Food Service Offers an a la Carte Menu of Career Options

By Denise Deveau, For Postmedia News February 4, 2013

You wouldn't think serving tables at a college restaurant in Brandon, Manitoba would get you to Brazil.

But Brittany Ross' outstanding restaurant service skills earned her gold medal in November at the WorldSkills Americas competition in Sao Paulo. A graduate from the hotel and restaurant management program at Assiniboine Community College's Institute of Culinary Arts in Brandon, the 20-year-old is an evening supervisor for the city's Lady of the Lake Cafe.

"I always loved to cook, but I knew I didn't want to do it my whole life," Ross says. "I decided taking a management program would allow me to explore all sorts of [food service career] options. Now I realize I can go anywhere with this program. There are so many things I want to do, like taking sommelier courses so I can go to Italy or Australia."

Train the Trainer

Young workers look to supervisors and managers for guidance, training and direction. Trainers should be are aware of their safety and health responsibilities and expectations in the workplace. As a trainer you should provide leadership, establish safe work procedures, lead by example and be familiar with the act and regulations.

The Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act W210 legislation requires supervisors to take all precautions necessary to protect the safety and health of a worker under his or her supervision. Supervisors and managers are required by legislation to ensure 4(2)(h)(i) the employer's workers are supervised by a person who is competent; because of knowledge, training or experience, that work is performed in a safe manner.
