Mandatory Orientation for Workers, Stronger Penalties for Employers

Did you know that on April 1, 2014 new protections were put in place to increase the safety and health of new workers, and those in high risk occupations, along with stronger penalties for employers who are found to put workers safety at risk? An occupation considered high risk and among the top three Young Worker Time Loss Injuries, is Food Counter Attendants and Kitchen Helpers.

As employers we have a moral and legal responsibility to provide a safe workplace for our workers. In 2014 there were 30,202 workers injured in Manitoba, and of that number 4,880 were young workers.

Manitoba Tourism Education College

Manitoba Tourism Education College (MTEC) is the new name for our Private Vocational School. We feel that the new name better reflects the mandate and purpose of the new organization. The college is a recognized post-secondary institution that is registered with Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning.

The College offers 6 and 8 week comprehensive training programs for needed positions in the hotel and retail industries in Manitoba. All of the training is delivered in the classroom, with a portion of the Line Cook Training Program delivered in a commercial kitchen.

Training focuses on the essential skills required to perform in all of the positions. Students not only gain the education and skill to perform these jobs, they will have gained practical experience through their work practicum.

Front Desk Clerk Training Program (6 weeks)
Line Cook Training Program (8 weeks)
Food and Beverage Server Training Program (6 weeks)
Housekeeping Room Attendant Training Program (6 weeks)
Retail Sales Associate Training Program (6 weeks)

Training Programs can be combined and students will graduate with training and experience in 2 or more occupations.

Attention Event Coordinators & Planners!

Whether you are new to the industry or established in your career, MTEC's 3- Part Training Series for Event Coordinators and Planners will provide the tools to assist you in planning an event from start to finish, covering areas such as administration, marketing, human resources, risk management and more!

This series will also be very beneficial for those of you who may not have the title of 'Event Planner', but you are the person in your organization that performs that function as part of your position

Spring Job Fair - April 20, 2016 at the RBC Convention Centre

MTEC has been administering the SAFE Hospitality Program since 2005, delivering free and subsidized training and consulting to thousands in the Restaurant and Food Service industries and beyond. But, effective, April 1, 2016, we will no longer be able to provide these free and subsidized services, unless we receive majority support* for the continuation of SAFE Hospitality as a safety association.

The Association is able to operate and provide services because Members of the Restaurant and Food Service Industry paid a levy of 6% to 7.84% as part of their WCB contributions. Safe Manitoba has proposed a new, reduced levy of only 1-3% for Safe Hospitality to continue to operate.

Currently, Hotels in Manitoba are paying a total of $1,668,362 in WCB costs, which means that the average hotels pays approximately $4,571/year in WCB costs. The proposed 3% levy would amount to approximately $137/year.

In addition to free and subsidized training, Safe Hospitality also assures owners, managers and others in the industry are aware of current legislation and issues affecting the industry. Having a safety association like SAFE Hospitality will also make businesses in the 70106 Rate Code, Restaurant and Food Service Operations, as well as the 70103, Hotels & Motels, eligible for future financial incentives currently being planned by SAFE Work Manitoba. Businesses who are not part of a safety association will not be eligible for the incentive programs.

To date, we have had 129 Restaurant and Food Service businesses sign the Letter of Support, unfortunately this only brings us to 20.28% of the required 50% to continue being funded as a safety association.

We are continuing to seek support until the end of March, but are preparing for the delivery of safety training, after the funding is discontinued.
