MTEC & SAFE Hospitality Present: Disability Safety Awareness Training for Businesses

In keeping with MTEC's mandate to keep our curriculum current and relevant, we are excited to announce a new session; Disability Safety Awareness Training for Businesses.

This 3-hour session will include information that is relevant to your employees and your customers. It will include safety and customer service training, as well as how to create an inclusive environment by giving you tools to manage this aspect of your business proactively and effectively.

A disability can happen at birth, as a result of an accident or aging. In Manitoba there are 170,000 people who have self-identified as disabled. As business owners and managers, we have a responsibility to operate an organization that is safe and accommodating. Having bars in the washroom isn't enough. We need to make sure that we have an establishment that is welcoming, accessible and where customers are greeted by well-trained, professional employees.

This session will teach you about requirements for safe evacuation, disability etiquette practices and the importance of inspections and documentation in regards to emergency procedures. Safety awareness training in this area can strengthen your existing health and safety program and promote a greater level of teamwork for your staff members.

This complimentary session will be held on June 13, from 1:00pm-4:00pm. For more information please contact us at 204-694-SAFE (7233) or email info@safehospitality.com. To register, please click here.

MTEC'S Semi Annual Job Fair at the Winnipeg Convention Centre
MTEC - Employers Experience Great Success with Talent Attraction

MTEC would like to send a special thanks to the Winnipeg Convention Centre for hosting the MTEC Hospitality, Tourism and Retail Job Fair on April 11, 2013.

We had a great mix of employers; with eleven hotels, one restaurant, one retail outlet, one crown corporation, one destination location and a recruiting organization, for a total of sixteen employers.

With 560 job-seekers in attendance, employers received approximately 1,100 applications from this spring's event! Employers each accepted close to 200 applications, and it is expected that 663 interviews will result from this 4-hour event. We are glad to be able to help our sector with their summer recruitment.

A poll of attendees helped us identify two main sources where people find information about our Job Fairs. The first is the MTEC Job Board and the second is employment counsellors, who are informed through targeted emails.

It is our ongoing commitment to continue to promote these events and to contribute to our employers needs for recruitment events that are time and cost effective. We look forward to another successful recruitment event in late summer / early fall.

Manitoba Introduces Legislation to Remove Barriers for People with Disabilities
Principles such as access, equality and universal design to be included

The government of Manitoba has introduced new legislation that would remove barriers for people with disabilities, with the goal of having a fully accessible province, said Family Services and Labour Minister Jennifer Howard.

"Nearly every Manitoban has a disability, knows someone with a disability or will acquire a disability as they age," Howard said. "We all benefit from preventing new barriers where we live, learn, work and play and by implementing long-term plans to remove existing ones."

Bill 26, the Accessibility for Manitobans Act, would set out a framework for collaborative, long-range planning between governments, the private sector and accessibility advocacy groups to make proactive and innovative solutions that enhance accessibility, independence and social inclusion of all Manitobans, Howard said.

The legislation would outline principles such as access, equality and universal design to guide the development of accessibility standards and regulations in the future, Howard said, adding the introduction of standards would help eliminate many existing barriers in such areas as building design, information services and employment practices.

The proposed legislation is based on recommendations from the Manitoba Accessibility Advisory Council, which is made up of members with diverse backgrounds and experiences including representatives of organizations of people with disabilities, business and municipalities.

The minister said public education would be key to introducing the new proposed legislation, to boost public awareness of the benefits of full accessibility and to create a clear understanding of the obligations individuals and organizations would have under standards established by the act. The proposed act would ensure compliance would be attained through a graduated enforcement system.
