What's New

employABILITY EXPO, Supporting Inclusive Employment for Manitobans with Disabilities

MTEC is pleased to announce that we are coordinating and hosting employABILITY EXPO, Supporting Inclusive Employment for Manitobans with Disabilities, on October 21st at the Victoria Inn Hotel & Conference Centre.

MTEC has taken over the expo from Diversity World, who started and successfully ran the Ability Axis Expo for 4 years.

Attention Event Coordinators & Planners!

Are you the one in your office that plans and coordinates the annual golf tournament, conference or AGM?

Whether you are new to the industry or established in your career, MTEC's 3- Part Training Series for Event Coordinators and Planners will provide the tools to assist you in planning an event from start to finish, covering areas such as administration, marketing, human resources, risk management and more!

This series is also very beneficial for those of you who may not have the title of 'Event Planner', but you are the person in your organization that performs that function as part of your position.

The next series begins on May 8th, so there is still time to register before your event. Even if your event is already scheduled, it's not too late to make sure that you haven't missed anything, like proper insurance coverage. You don't know what you don't know. There are many things in organizing and coordinating an event that could be missed, directly impacting the success of the event.

A comprehensive emerit Event Coordinator Workbook, valued at $85.00 is included. Click here for more information or contact Fiona Slikker, fslikker@mtec.mb.ca, or 204-957-7437.

The Manitoba Training and Education Centre, our Private Vocational School, offers 6 and 8 week training programs. All programs have a work practicum component and all of our training programs are based on nationally recognized occupational standards.

Manitoba is experiencing rapid growth in the hospitality and restaurant industry. MTEC opened the school for two purposes: to provide students with training and experience that will assist them in gaining employment and excelling at their careers, and to meet the current and forecasted need for well-trained employees for the industry.

June 9: Front Desk Clerk Training Program (6 weeks)

June 9: Housekeeping Room Attendant Training Program (6 weeks)

July 7: Line Cook Training Program starts (8 weeks)

July 7: Food and Beverage Server Training Program (6 weeks)

These 6 and 8 week comprehensive training program are delivered by industry professionals in the classroom and a portion of the Line Cook Training Program is delivered in a commercial kitchen. Students will not only gain the education and skill to perform these jobs, they will have gained practical experience through their work practicum.

Success in Partnerships!

MTEC is pleased to post three videos on our website that celebrate the power of partnerships. The videos are from three successful programs where we partnered with local agencies to bring training to their clients and worked with them to facilitate employment in the Tourism and Hospitality industries.

For more information on these programs, contact Lori Slobodian, Training Program Manager, at  lslobodian@mtec.mb.ca or (204) 957-7437.

Safety Corner

Have you ever heard the phrase, if you don't use it, you lose it? Many important certifications have an expiry date on them for this reason. Sometimes certifications have to be renewed because there has been new developments or research in the area, and techniques are changing and advancing.

Two examples of certifications that can expire are the Emergency First Aid/CPR Certificate and the Food Handler Certificate. The Emergency First Aid/CPR Certificates must be renewed every three years, and the Food Handler Certificate every five years. Expiry dates can be found right on your certificates. Renewing your certifications is a small price to pay for continued education in life saving techniques.

The more often we can practice safe habits, the more they become second nature.

Food Handler Training - May 30 - 8:30am-5:00pm
$115.00+GST (includes manual, exam, and two certificates)

Emergency First Aid/CPR & AED Training - June 10 - 8:30am-4:30pm
$89.00+GST (includes manual, test and two certificates)

Food Handler Training - June 26  - 8:30am-5:00pm
$115.00+GST (includes manual, exam, and two certificates)
