Is Your Business a Respectful Workplace?

Bullying in schools is a current problem that we have been hearing about in the media, but did you know that workplace bullying and harassment is a big problem in the workforce today? In 2009, more than 75 per cent of the registered complaints to the Manitoba Human Rights Commission were in the area of employment.

Did you know that if you terminate an employee and the employee can prove that they were discriminated against, the Human Rights Commission has the authority to have the employee reinstated? As an employer, manager, business owner or supervisor you have a responsibility to ensure that discrimination and harassment do not occur in your workplace. The Human Rights Code protects against current, past and potential employees.

What is harassment? It is any behaviour that degrades, demeans, humiliates, or embarrasses a person, and that a reasonable person should have known would be unwelcome. Harassment can take place in the workplace itself, or outside the workplace in a situation that is in some way connected to work. Bullying in certain cases is considered harassment. Threats, verbal taunting, name calling and put-downs are all considered harassment.

The damage to personal self esteem and the morale in an organization cannot be overstated. As managers and supervisors, you have the ability to create a work environment where employees feel safe and respected. Not only will the employees benefit from being treated fairly, it will reduce employee turn-over and improve the reputation of your organization.

The Manitoba Workplace Health and Safety Act states that employers are required to develop both a violence and harassment policy for their workplaces and workers are required to be trained during their mandatory safety orientation.
