CHAMPION OF DIVERSITY AWARDS ANNOUNCED AT CEREMONY Oct. 30, 2013
Awareness Month Highlights Value and Potential of Persons with Disabilities

MTEC is proud to announce that Steve Walker from the Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites and Greenwood Inn and Suites Winnipeg was recognized as a Champion of Diversity Award Winner and John Savard, MTEC Board Chair participated as a presenter for the awards.

Manitobans who offer outstanding employment practices in hiring, training and advancing people with disabilities in the workplace were honoured at a special awards ceremony with Finance Minister Jennifer Howard, minister responsible for persons with disabilities.

"It is an honour to acknowledge these Manitobans who are making work sites more inclusive and diverse by seeing the skills of people with disabilities and not putting up unnecessary barriers to success in the workplace," said Howard.  "Tonight we are also celebrating the role of individuals with disabilities in their workplaces and communities and thanking business leaders who are champions in the employment of Manitobans with disabilities."

Community members of a joint community and government committee on disability and employment issues reviewed the nominations and chose the recipients.

"These employers demonstrate the best practice of diversity and accommodation in our places of employment," said said Brian Stewart, co-chair of the Joint Community and Government Committee on Disability and Employment Issues.  ". They embrace the skills and talents of individuals, looking beyond the differences a disability can bring.  It is hoped that their experience and respect for inclusion will spread through our communities," said Stewart.

The awards ceremony completes a series of events in October where dozens of Manitoba businesses in the arts, retail, tourism and hospitality, broadcasting, health care, education and medical fields assisted young Manitobans with disabilities to explore career options.  The events, as part of Disability Employment Awareness Month, included:

  • lunch-and-learn sessions for businesses;
  • a Career Exploration Week to bring youth with disabilities together with employers to explore career options;
  • the National Educational Association of Disabled Students workshop to promote leadership skills among post-secondary students with disabilities; and
  • the Ability Axis Employment Expo that advanced the participation of people with disabilities in Manitoba's workforce.

The recipients of the Champion of Diversity Awards were celebrated in the Rotunda, at the Legislative Building and details are posted at: www.deam-mb.ca. The website also offers examples of how various Manitoba businesses helped participate and promote Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Safety Corner

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is an information delivery system related to the hazards of chemicals, safe work, handling, emergency and storage procedures. The system aims to ensure that all workers have the knowledge to work safely with or around chemicals. WHMIS training is legally required for all workers who handle and are exposed or likely to be exposed to hazardous materials or controlled products at the workplace.

Employers are required to ensure "that a worker who works with or near a controlled product or performs work involving the manufacture of a control product receives training..." Part 35.3(1) Manitoba Health & Safety Regulation MR217/06.

What steps would you take to protect your workers and company? How can you maintain a safe, healthy and respectful workplace? Know the severe impact and damages of having a disrespectful workplace can have on your company's success or failure. Know what a respectful workplace is all about. Having a respectful workplace will lead to employee satisfaction and in return increase employee morals, reduce high rate of absenteeism and turnover.

Employers are also required to develop and implement a written policy with corrective action against an offender to prevent harassment, train in violence prevention and ensure workers comply with these policies in the workplace.

HR Facts

Canadian Workplace Essentials Webinar Series

As the population ages and labour shortages return, tourism and hospitality employers will need to look to non-traditional sources to fill vacant positions. New Canadians make up one of the fastest growing segments of the population, and are a significant source of new workers in the Canadian labour force. Taking advantage of this labour pool is an excellent way for tourism and hospitality businesses to find valuable new employees, but there are often difficulties in finding and training new Canadians due to cultural and language differences.

To assist employers interested in recruiting, hiring and retaining employees who are new to Canada, emerit Training Solutions has developed a series of webinars that illustrate techniques to overcome all barriers to including new Canadians in an effective, happy and loyal workforce. These two webinars can be used individually or as a series depending on the needs of the employer.
