MTEC Launched New Responsible Service Certification
Smart Choices, Responsible Service Certification
MTEC has launched a new responsible service program that has
replaced Serving it Safe and the Problem Gambling Assistance Program
(PGAP). Smart Choices, Responsible Service Certification was launched on
January 2, 2017, and Serving it Safe is no longer being offered.
Managers, staff and security who already have Serving it
Safe or It's Good Business Certification will have a five-year grace
period before they have to take Smart Choices.
Who has to take this training?
Under the Liquor and Gaming Act, all managers, security and
staff who serve or sell liquor must take responsible service training.
While this training has been required for service establishments since
the 1990s, the same standard will now apply to liquor retailers. This
includes managers, security staff and delivery drivers at beer vendors,
Liquor Marts, liquor vendors, specialty wine stores and duty-free
stores. Retail staff at liquor manufacturers with a retail endorsement
will also be required to have this training.
Service Establishments: Effective January 2, 2017, managers, security and staff who do not already have
Serving it Safe or It's Good Business training must successfully
complete Smart Choices before starting to work in a licensed service
establishment.
Retail Establishments: As this is a new
requirement for retail licensees, managers, security, staff and delivery
drivers who currently work in licensed retail establishments will have a
one-year grace period to complete responsible service training. The LGA
will begin to inspect retail premises for compliance with this training
requirement effective January 1, 2018.
Smart Choices, Responsible Service Certification will be offered on-line, in the classroom and paper-based.
For more information about Smart Choices, go to
www.SmartChoicesmb.ca or call Vanessa Hernandez, Smart Choices,
Responsible Service Coordinator at 204-957-7437 or email vhernandez@mtec.mb.ca.

Hire, Train and Retain Employees
The mission of the Manitoba Tourism Education Council (MTEC)
is to enhance the performance and ensure the sustainability of
Manitoba's tourism and hospitality industry by delivering relevant
training and human resource development.
We will work with your business to help you train and
retain your current staff and fill any future staffing needs. If you are
currently fully staffed, we can help you to develop those staff
members. Making the investment in training will result in cutting
expensive turnover costs and build pride in your business. For our
training offerings, please visit Upcoming MTEC Training.
If you are working towards filling staffing gaps, we can
help! Have you considered where you will recruit your staff? We can help
here too! Year round, MTEC has a Job Board. The MTEC Job Board is a
free tool for Manitoba Hospitality, Tourism and Retail employers. For
more about this recruitment tool, please visit http://mtec.mb.ca/job-board.asp.
The MTEC Job Fair is another great venue to find new
staff. We know that for many of your businesses your hiring periods are
highest in the summer months and then to replace the students returning
to school. We host two job fairs per year. One in the early spring, and
one in late summer. The 2017 Spring Job Fair will be held at the RBC
Convention Centre on March 22nd. As always, you can expect between
350-450 job-seekers at this event. Save the date, and expect literature
about this event next month!
If you would like more information about any of the training we offer, please call 204-957-7437 or info@mtec.mb.ca.
