DESCRIPTION: Purpose of Position

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centred around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Interpretive Program Developer will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Director, Indigenous Relations and Community Engagement (IRCE), the Interpretive Program Developer develops and delivers public programs, projects and activities for a wide range of audiences to provide engaging and meaningful visitor experiences and opportunities for learning, dialogue and reflection onsite, online and occasionally in other locations.

Development of Indigenous relations and community engagement activities are delivered through public programs that include but are not limited to program partnerships and collaborations in community, in-gallery interpretation, family and youth programs, workshops, Museum dialogue sessions, talks, panel presentations, performances, special events, experiential learning, online learning, virtual programs, seminars and more. Audiences include Indigenous, Canadian and international visitors of varying ages, backgrounds, interests and abilities visiting on their own or in organized groups, as well as others who wish to engage with the Museum from a distance.

The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker and innovator, and will bring a collaborative approach to their role.
Key Responsibilities

• Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
• Researches and develops programs, planning the content, learning strategies and outcomes, and most appropriate mechanism for delivery of each new program, project, or activity assigned.
• Leads, develops and supports delivery of programs employing informal and formal learning pedagogy, dialogue techniques and approaches.
• Implements approved IRCE programming strategies, frameworks and plans by researching, developing and planning the implementation of specific activities, events and programs for a wide variety of audiences and abilities onsite and virtually.
• Develops strategies for delivering complex and sensitive content to multiple audiences.
• Works with Elders and communities (Mιtis, First Nations, and Inuit) to deepen understanding, knowing and familiarity of Indigenous ways, cultural protocols and norms.
• Develops and implements approaches to communicate program concepts for training and coaching to orientate delivery staff, and for marketing and promotions for public relations staff.
• Develops programs and projects in accordance with organizational goals, objectives and identified priorities.
• Prepares program concepts, plans and project cost estimates for their approval.
• Identifies, sources and prepares programming materials and equipment needs within approved project budgets.
• Collaborates and connects regularly with programming partners and speakers, performers and experts to discuss, co-develop and curate, confirm and coordinate program arrangements.
• Prepares various documents such as program outlines, program descriptions, briefing notes, bibliographies, reference lists, contact lists, etc. for a wide variety of audiences.
• Assists in development of annual IRCE public programming schedules and calendars.
• Supports ongoing evaluation of programming in cooperation with other departments.
• Participates in activities related to marketing and promotion of programs, including digital engagement and outreach.
• Supports and delivers a wide range of education, in-gallery and virtual programs.
• Provides logistical support for programs and activities.


Required Qualifications

• University or college degree in an appropriate discipline (Indigenous rights, human rights, history, museum studies, education, communications or marketing or another relevant field of study). Note: candidates must clearly demonstrate how their education is relevant to the position.
• Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated and proven experience in the development of education and public programming to a wide range of audiences, ranging from tours, storytelling, theatre and experiential programming to formal pedagogy or training.
• Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience in delivering public, educational, cultural, art, historical or human rights programs to people of different ages, skills, or knowledge sets, and with a range of abilities.
• Ability to communicate proficiently in both official languages.
• Experience working in community and engaging with various communities (i.e., Indigenous, disability, ethnocultural, etc.).
• Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
• Demonstrated knowledge of human rights subject matter.
• Demonstrated and proven ability to develop programs and projects in accordance with organizational goals, objectives and identified priorities.
• Experience working in informal learning environments (private, public and collaborative spaces).
• Experience evaluating programs, creating reports and providing recommendations.
• Demonstrated knowledge of good practices in interpretation, visitor engagement and working with partners.
• Proven experience leading a group of peers to reach a common goal.
• Proven experience running meetings and conference calls.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe.
• Strong time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure, multi-task and prioritize.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

Desired Qualifications

• Bachelor of Education or teaching experience in adult education or other setting (such as a museum).
• Advanced knowledge and awareness of human rights (past and present).
• Knowledge of Indigenous history and colonization, and methods to decolonize.
• Ability to speak an Indigenous language.
• Experience in developing workshops for continuing education, professional training and adult education.
• Experience in the arts, cultural or heritage sector.
• Proven experience in development and coordination of large public programs and event production.

Official Language Proficiency:

• CCC – Written comprehension (advanced), written expression (advanced), oral proficiency (advanced)

Other

• Work is onsite at the CMHR, in an office environment punctuated with delivery in public spaces.
• A considerable amount of standing and walking is required.
• Ability to lift and move program materials and equipment.
• Requires working irregular hours (evenings and weekends) on a regular basis with some travel required.
